Located in the relatively newly developing suburbs of Bharathipuram, the Selvam residence is a typical South Indian middle family home. The Selvams are not your typical middle class couple though. Salai Selvam is a freelance trainer and educational researcher running a magazine and library for children, in addition to being a part of a number of other activities. A well travelled lady, she particularly understands the needs of people from similar vocations and has played host to many a research scholar, historian, artists, people from various NGOs etc. Selvam is an artist, photographer, teacher and is sought out by various magazines for photoshoots in and around Madurai.

The stay itself is the typical middle class independant house of which a room has been alloted for the purpose of hosting guests. For those interested in that sort of thing, Salai is an avid collector of antique furniture, and the same are used by the Selvam family. The Selvams are quite flexible when it comes to sharing the various utilities including the refrigerator, television, computer and even the kitchen.

Being frequent travellers themselves, the Selvams have a very personal and very good understanding of the needs of a single traveller looking to get some research or similar work done. Their wide network of contacts in and around Madurai, including the villages around, and their first hand knowledge of the practical needs of a scholar - such as a seemingly trivial but quite important things like having to produce bills for expenses incurred, has helped them successfully play host to a number of scholars, research students, journalists, photographers etc.
